Hi Folks,
some days passed since I wrote about the installer. I worked a lot on the code and with the initial help of Ingo Rennder the code is now PHP5. Beside the checks that will runbefore installation, you won't even be able to start the installation with PHP4 anymore.
I heard some ranting about this decision the last days, but I'm pretty sure that the most people will be happy about it somewhere in the future. ;-)
Anyway, you might be interested in the progress the installer makes. Well, I'm currently working on the backend module. It's now possible to load modules and save data via AJAX. This might sounds very boring but in fact it's a major milestone for the development because we are now able to bring back all the options, that are currently available. This means, we can basically replace the old installer in the next alpha release of TYPO3 if we get all the options into the code until then. But I think we'll make it.
Next big milestone will be the T3CON07 next week. I really hope we can show a well working installer next week. And with some luck we show a nice surprise. But I don't promise anything! :-D
Greets,
Thomas

I can't understand why people want to stay with PHP4. We use PHP5 now over two years on our production servers without any trouble. Sure if we update something we've to do some testing, but this is always the case if you change something.
Beside this: Coding PHP5 is a lot more fun. try-catch blocks and exception helps a lot cleaning up the code. There are much more coding advantages in using PHP5 like having __call() and __autoload() methods.
I truly appreciate this change and encourage you in going on!

Hi!
I really can't understand why people still stick to PHP4. Version 5 offers lots of improvements* which will certainly push TYPO3 further. As far as I know the upcoming version 4.2 of TYPO3 will require PHP5.2, too.
Keep on the good work
