I HATE spam

By: Thomas

Hi,

a new wave of trackback spam is making it's way through the internet. It was easy to block all referers with *casino* or *poker* in it through the apache config. But now the car-insurance industry is trying to place some links in blogs. *ARGH* Every referer has a different name where only *car* is allways included. I don't want to block all referers with "car" in it because I think I would block a lot of legal vistors with it. :-/

If someone knows an elegant way to block them, let me know. Maybe there is some blacklist technique available out there!?

Greets,

Thomas

I thought recent version of timtab tried to fetch referer to see if it really has a link to the trackbacked page. Or I am wrong?

Hi Dmitry,
that doesn't matter because the links are inside the postings. :-/

Well, when I used WordPress, I had an option to send all comments/trackbacks by e-mail for validation to me first. Then I could click a link and say that I want to approve or reject this comment.

Timtab needs several improvements in trackback area. In fact, I cannot ping anything from my blog because I have allow_url_fopen disabled but timtab relies on it and igonres typo3š curl settings. I tried to contact Ingo and ask his permission to fix several things in timtab (this is easy for me) but he did not reply at all. May be he is not close to his mail...

Can't you add one of these graphic codes which is shown inside a picture when posting a comment? Many spambots shouldn't be able to read those.

I think, that modern spam-bots can read these captchas... I have got a phpbb with captcha implemented, but there is more spam-bot-activity, than user ;-)

@Dmitry: Ingo is currentl in the US and I don't know how often he reads his mails this days. But he think he will be available the next days.

@Thomas: No, because the spam does not come through the normal comment form but the spammers deliver their spam via trackbacks. So a captcha will not prevent me from that. :-/

@Sebastian: PHPBB? Are you sure that not the software is the real problem? ;-)

Greets,
Thomas
