Hi,
it seems that I got my first core job yesterday.
There was a discussion about the progress for 4.1 in the core list and Michael Scharkow said that he has not the time now to finish the new install tool for 4.1. So I jumped in and proposed myself to take this over. Some minutes later my name was written down in the Wiki. ;-)
I got some information about past brainstormings from Patrick Gaumond and I collected some of my own ideas yesterday evening. I'm not sure If I can achieve the huge task until 4.1 and I won't promise anything. Especially because I'm a newbie to the core team I'm still search for guide to the start. :-)
If you have any ideas for a new install tool, feel free to add a comment.
Greets,
Thomas

One problem of the install tool is that, when working with an already existing localconf.php with parameters already set in it, sometimes it would not locate correctly existing settings and it would write them down another time downwards in the file.
It also fails loading and displaying properly some settings, such as im_negate_mask, from my existing file.
Thus I beleive consistency checks should be improved.
Also, when importing the localconf.php from another system, if the database settings (database name, username, password) have not been edited manually in the localconf.php file, it seems they can't be corrected from the install tool.
If you could check this out it would be nice.
Congratulations anyway !

It would be nice if the installer is also able to install Typo3 on other databases like Oracle ore PostgreSQL.
I know it is a very huge task but it will be increase the acceptance of the DBAL and improve the use of Typo3 in companies with a strict DB policy.
If not in 4.1 in 4.2 :-)?

Hi
I would suggest do programm something like a out of the box script:
2 Files:
typo3install.php
typo3.(zip|tar(gz|bz2)
You upload only those two files with ftp, set the permissions and the 'pre installer script' unpacks the zip file and jumps to the real installer script.
You could even consider to download the typo3 package with the preinstaller script.
I'm shure it would give TYPO3 a huge boost, if the users only need to upload a single php script to a hosting and all unpacking, folder creation is done by the script. You could even provide a dropdown to select the typo3 package...
Of course you would need to scann which functions are available (like http fopen). This way you could provide a 'pre analyzing' tool which produces a report which the user could send to the hoster...
Greetings Jonas

@JD: Yes this would be an nice Feature too.
@Thomas: Phpwebsite has an "Command Line Installer". and it works awsome! You type 2-3 Commands and the whole installatation is done in 4-5 Seconds ... Typo3 needs also something like this ;-)

Hi,
check the Gallery2 Pre-Installer... (http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:Preinstaller)
It works fine and let's you install Gallery2 in a few minutes. The Webserver fetches the files by itselfs...
Something like this would be nice for TYPO3 ("Step 0")
Bye,
Fabrizio

Yes! It would be great if the Options in the "All Configuration" Section would made as a Dropdown instead of textfields. I know, its not possible when it has different values eg. pathes an so on, but in the true/false fields.
I don't know if its allready done but integrate the possibility to translate the installer in other languages just like the Typo3 Extensions do.
Thanx a good luke in the Core-Team ;-)
