Hello,
first I have to say that I'm a little bit sad that nothing has changed since the last blog entry about the new Installer. I had some vacation days and spent them with my girlfriend and ... you know what I mean. :-)
Anyway, there are some other guys out there that have worked and so I can proudly present a first layout concept for the 1-2-3 installer made by Jens Hoffmann.
Now it's your turn to tell me your opinion about this concept. What do you like? What do you dislike? What ideas come to your mind if you look at the layout? What can be done better? What is great? What is your favorite meal? Oh no... bad joke!
So please, spam the comments to let me know how the future of the installer shoudl look like.
Greets,
Thomas
[update]Okay, the auto-size was a little bit too small. So I attached the full-size image to the post[/update]

Hi Thomas
It looks very clear, and clean. I like the design!
Cheers,
Mario

I like the design too, but I think the progress bar at the bottom isn't very usefull since there is allready the numbering on the left side.
Btw, the spelling is really bad... ;)
Bye

looks great - but the background looks a bit strange... maybe you can remove the typo3-logo in the background.
#6: Ingo commented on Tuesday, 16-01-07 13:50
The background makes it look too busy, after that is removed one should check the shadow, too. Maybe the progress bar is really some kind of redundant and yeah, the wording... Other than that I like it =)

I really like the Design WITH the Background Image. Maybe, the HelpSidebar should be vissible by default - you know: people dont search for "help", so it should be on without an option to hide it.

Apart from the obvious spelling and design issues, I'd get rid of approx. 7 steps in order to keep the 1-2-3 installer properly named, or even comply with the notorious "there is no step three" ;)
Honestly, I'd hate to go through so much clicking: Why do I need a dedicated authentication screen (twice?), or system requirements, or storage setup, or extension installation? Unless these steps are only meant to fill the space in the mockup, I'd object to this wizardry and keep the installation as simple as possible, and move everything that is not really really necessary to the regular settings in the install tool.

What a beautifull install screen !! Great Jobs Thomas !!!
Just two little mistakes to word Wizard : wizard have only one "z" and welcome have only one "L"

Thanks for your compliments! But the screen was not made by me but by Jens Hoffmann as mentioned in the text. ;-)

many many typos:
inspiring -> inspiring
comon -> common
menu:
- authentication vs. authenticate: the difference is not really clear, maybe some others names?
- you could remove "setup" and "configuration" suffixes, since we are using a setup tool.
- you could then name "security" / "security" to "security I" and "security II" (for example)
the button "last step" is not really useful:
- beginners will use "next step" button
- advanced users will use the navigation
the is no reason to clutter the ui if this button will be very rarely used.
inactive menu entries: i wouldnt grey out the inactive items since it then looks like they are not enabled at all = cannot be selected. so i would use black text and de-saturated, but not dimmed icons.
- so
i would not grey the labe

go on ;-)

Looks really great!
Some comments:
- I really like the design (with the BG image) as well. Just the buttons are a bit too shiny IMHO.
- There are far too many steps (But I guess the screen shot was only about the layout anyway, wasn't it?)
- The progress bar in the bottom is not very useful IMHO as the navigation already shows the progress in a very nice way.
cheers

May better then the old one but not good at all. The screen looks looks like a very complicated app. Clearness is missiing too, to much shiny elements. More focus about important things are missing. Sizes of elements to equal, space is too small.
Just my opinion :)

Hi,
thanks for all your comments! I will think about all of them and discuss them with Jens at the tour! I think we can something good! :-D

I like this design a lot. Others have already mentioned that there are too much steps and that the last button isn't needed, but other than that, everythings great. I even like the progress bar as I don't like math, not even simple tasks like "ok, we have ten steps, I am at step one, this is 10% finished". For me it's easier to just see that it is 10% of the whole installation routine. And it get's more complicated, if we have, say, 7 steps.
One small thing comes to my mind when I look at the image in fullscreen: the window with the installation is small compared to the "whitespace" of the background. It could be a bit bigger.
Keep on with the great work!
Susanne

I really like your new installer. I don't think there are to many steps or anything else should be changed. Only the typos..
Thanks a lot :)

Nice design, seems to be thought through.
But typography is not your favourite? ;)
Just to be mentioned: Why making a completly new design for the install wizard? Wouldn't it be better to build up an install wizard which is following the main concept of the whole typo3 backend?
Probably it would be possible to build up a seperate module 'Install stuff' or something like that with the functions in it, the install tool has already and with integrating ter update etc.., and then throw all the extensions to a tree, for example, with different categorisation 'backend/frontend/misc' 'loaded/not loaded'.
The 1-2-3 mode of the installtool probably just needs a small redesign, according to the new (or not so new by now ;) ) typo3 skin.
greets from Tyrol, Clemens

As you mentioned above, " it is much faster to copy and paste the needed stuff from other files." ...
Thanks for your great work and good luck!

At the first glance it seems to be a pity, that you've stopped working at the installer ( I really ...

Looks very clear. But I can't read the navigation text on the left side. The picture is a little bit too small for that. What I don't like is the color of the last/next step buttons. Grey ones always look like "cancel" for me. And I won't make them "shiny" because everything else doesn't have this look. However its a huge step forward!
And what's the function of the green ribbon on the right side? :)
